Pumpkins are an essential this time of year. They show up in our coffee, our homes, and, of course, our porches. But that’s not all you can do with a pumpkin! Check out these creative ways to use a pumpkin that might inspire you to try something new this year.
Don’t bother carving it—paint it!
Pumpkins will last for a really long time when they’re intact. As soon as you carve them, though, they start to rot. Instead of carving your pumpkin up this year—try painting it. If you like spooky scenes, you can go a little Edgar-Allan-Poe on it and add the silhouette of a raven. Even better, you can display these painted-pumpkins inside your house, unlike a carved pumpkin, which would just stink up the whole house.
Gut it for its seeds!
Pumpkin seeds are delicious—and nutritious! When you carve out a pumpkin, don’t throw away those seeds. Instead, try baking them with your favorite spices and adding them to a salad. You can even cover them with pumpkin spice if you’re a part of the fan club.
Dinner in a pumpkin.
Yes, pumpkins are edible. And delicious. A great way to get in the mood for fall is to bake dinner in a pumpkin. Gut the pumpkin, fill it with your favorite rice dish, and bake it. When you serve the meal, you can scrape out the sides of the pumpkin and serve them with the rice. Check out this recipe for more information.
They can make a perfect candleholder.
You can hollow out enough of a pumpkin to fit a candle for a great centerpiece decoration. With a few leaves or branches, you’re all set for a centerpiece! Don’t forget to rub vaseline on the cut parts of the pumpkin to keep it from rotting.
Use it as a flower vase.
This is another great centerpiece hack. Cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin just large enough to fit a small bowl. Fill that bowl with water and use it as a flower vase! Flower shops typically have flower bouquets that look like fall and will go perfectly with your pumpkin vase.
Use it to present appetizers.
There are tons of different presentations you can use for appetizers or other courses of your meal. Check out this video from Tasty showing one recipe for a jack o’ lantern appetizer presentation.
