Sara Chives is a 34-year-old mother in Australia. She was recently diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.
Sara has two children—Alfie, who is 18-months-old and Hugh, who is 3-years-old. Sara knows that when her sons grow up, they won’t remember much about her.
In 2008, Sara was diagnosed with brain cancer. At that point, she fought it off. In March of 2017, though, her brain cancer returned. She has three tumors and has been told that she likely won’t live much longer. She shared with ABC, “The question isn’t whether I will die from this disease, it’s when. It is the very question that has plagued me since brain cancer and I first made our acquaintance.”
Sara’s son Alfie was also diagnosed with brain cancer. His form of cancer is rare and very aggressive. Only 18-months-old, Alfie has already had two surgeries and will continue to undergo treatments for a least another year.
Sara decided to write a letter to her sons so that they could hear about her in her own voice. She wanted to be able to encourage them in whatever they go through.
She starts the letter by sharing, “I won’t be around to see you grow up. It’s a hard thing to say and even harder to face.”
She shares, “Heartbroken doesn’t come close to describing the pain I feel at not being in your lives in the future, but I would never change or forego the time we have spent together and the immense joy you have brought me. You are without a doubt my proudest accomplishments.”
She goes on to talk about her husband’s future, “There will come a time when he wants to find happiness again with a new partner. Accept and embrace his choice, and know she will be a positive female influence in your lives too...Your Dad is the most admirable, courageous man I have ever known.”
She ended her letter by sharing, “I will be forever grateful for the time we spent together, the memories we created, the love we shared...Always will be. Love, mum.”
