Now that we are just a few days away from the official start of winter, most places in the country are already feeling the effects of the cold. The arrival of snow and ice adds extra dangers for both humans and animals alike.
In this case, a deer somehow wandered out onto the ice in Sunriver, Oregon and was unable to find its way off. Hoofs and ice don’t mix together all that well.
Some helpful kids tried to help out the deer at first, but the ice was too dangerous, and they were told to get back to shore.
Emergency services were eventually called in to help the poor animal. Luckily for the deer, the Sunriver Fire and Rescue had recently acquired a special ice sled and a cold water suit thanks to a grant from Firehouse Subs.
The fire department was looking forward to testing out their new equipment. “I was ready to go, I was excited,” said firefighter JJ Johnston. “We’ve been training a little with the ice rescue stuff. It’s great to be able to put it to use.
The firefighters were able to maneuver the ice sled out to the deer and Johnston was able to nudge the deer over to the shore. “I think he was a little tired, or sore,” said Johnston.
