In the United States each year, over 23,000 children age out of the foster care system because they have reached the age of 18. Many of them have very few resources. In fact, 1 in 5 children in foster care become homeless after age 18.
Anthony Berry used to be one of those foster care students. He had been in foster care since the age of 9. Age 16 now, he assumed that he would never be adopted by anyone else and he would age out, just like many other children.
Anthony actually didn’t even want to get adopted. He didn’t think that the effort would be worth it.
His mind was changed by a former English teacher, though. Bennie Berry was his teacher at Pathways Learning Center in Texas.
One day, he asked Bennie to adopt him and become a mother for the first time. She was touched by Anthony’s question. However, as any responsible teacher would, she responded, “Finish your assignment and then you can show me the website.”
They began to look at information regarding adoption. They found out that it actually really could be an option for her to adopt him, so they started on the process.
Last week, Anthony was officially adopted by Bennie. Out of the 18 children who were being adopted at the Courthouse that day, Anthony was the oldest. He shared with ABC News, “How many kids my age get adopted nowadays?”
Anthony shared that he was so excited to get adopted that he had a hard time sleeping. He shared, “I really couldn’t sleep last night. I told mom, I was like, ‘I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep.’ She was like, ‘I don’t think I am either.’”
Bennie was also overjoyed to adopt Anthony. She shared, “I have a son. I’m more than elated. I have a son for the rest of my life.”
It’s incredible to see this sweet family finally become a true family. Check out another story of a young girl being told that she would be adopted. Find the story here.
