When you’re trying to lose weight, it can be tempting to step on that scale every day. You’ve eaten healthy since you last stepped on it, you feel good, and you worked out yesterday, so it should be lower, right?

But no. It’s not. It’s the same number as yesterday—or maybe even a couple more pounds.

What do you do when that happens? You get frustrated. Your best friend might have gotten to their ideal weight, so why can’t you?

Losing weight is complicated. There might be tons of different reasons that you’re struggling with losing your weight—or there might be no reason at all! It’s important to keep your morale up. One of the best ways to do this is stepping off the scale.

So if you’re trying to lose weight, how often should you step on the scale? Too often and you might lose hope; too much and you’ll have no idea if you’re making progress.

Most experts recommend that you should weigh absolutely no more than once each week—often even less. This is especially best if you experience a lot of weight fluctuations.

If you find that weighing yourself is not motivating and instead just makes you frustrated, then weigh yourself even less. A single pound won’t seem like much, but if you lose five pounds over the course of a month, it will be much more encouraging.

Another important factor to keep in mind when weighing yourself is the time of day. Instead of weighing yourself after working out or at the end of the day, weigh yourself at the same time on the same day of each month. This will ensure that your hormonal cycles are similar each time and you will get a more accurate comparison.

Instead of weighing yourself every day, try spacing your weigh-ins out more. This might give you the motivation to get fit, and you’ll be able to get better comparisons.
