For many students, finals week is one of the most stressful and jam-packed times of the year. One student in Kansas City recently made that week much more stressful for herself. She gave birth.

She didn’t just give birth during finals week. She was literally finishing an exam while she was in labor at the hospital.

Nayzia Thomas is a student at Johnson County Community College. When she found out she was pregnant, she was working three jobs and going to school. She knew that her due date was soon after finals week, but she had a few weeks in between the two.

However, she started going into labor early—during finals week. She wanted to do everything she could to be able to focus on her son when he was born, so she knew she needed to finish her finals before giving birth. She didn’t want to take an incomplete in the course and have to worry about it at another time. She just wanted it to be over.

“It was hard to focus,” she explained, “But I had such a motivation to finish before I brought my son into the world, so that he could be my only focus.”

She finished her psychology final just in time. She shared, “Luckily, I was done with my paper. The contractions are all bad. They get worse as you go along.”

After eight hours of labor, two hours of which she was also taking a final, the hard part should’ve been over for Nayzia. She was holding her son Anthony (AJ), who was born healthy at 6 pounds 15 ounces.

She suddenly started to feel unwell. She shared, “I got really lightheaded and really woozy. I wasn’t feeling right, and I blacked out.”

She was suffering from extreme blood loss. The doctors eventually were able to stop the bleeding and gave her fluids to help her recover. However, when she was discharged from the hospital, she continued to experience complications.

“My chest was hurting really bad,” she shared. “When I moved, I couldn’t really breathe.”

She was readmitted to the hospital and given a blood transfusion to help replenish the blood that she had lost. After that, she was back to normal.

Now Nayzia is back at home with her sweet baby. She got her grade back and received an A on the exam for a GPA this semester of 3.5. We’re so glad she was able to accomplish everything!

In other news, this woman’s husband was killed by a drunk driver. During her maternity pictures, though, he showed up in a special way. Read the story here.
