Technology Is Making Your Skin Look Older and Disrupting Your Sleep—Here’s Why

We all know to protect our skin from the sun’s rays by wearing sunscreen. But what about protecting our skin from the rays that come from other things?

In fact, those devices we stare at for hours every day release their own rays of light. Phones, computers, and tablets release High Energy Visible Light (HEV). HEV is also known as blue light.

According to research, overexposure to blue light can have a huge impact on the appearance of your skin. It can accelerate signs of aging by worsening wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.

Overexposure to blue light doesn’t only impact your skin. It can also affect your sleep cycles.

According to research done by Harvard Medical School, too much light at night can throw off your body’s biological clock. “At night, light throws the body’s biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of whack. Sleep suffers. Worse, research shows that it may contribute to the causation of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.”

According to dermatologist Howard Murad, “Excessive blue light accelerates the oxidation process, which elicits inflammation and damages the skin barrier, making it more prone to signs of aging, increased uneven skin tone, dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Between loss of sleep and the health of your skin, blue light does have a huge impact on your overall health. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it.

The best way to help keep blue light from impacting your sleep is by turning down the brightness of your phone. Many devices also have settings that will change the shade of the light. On iPhones it’s called “Night Shift” and on Androids it’s called “Night Mode.”

It can also be helpful to avoid blue light for about an hour before going to bed. This can allow your body’s natural sleep cycle to realize that it’s time to sleep. Pick up a book, draw, color, journal—anything that doesn’t involve a technology screen.

By allowing your body to get the amount of sleep that it needs, you can greatly decrease the impact of blue light on your skin. This can help you stay more energized, happier, and stay looking younger.
