Spencer Sleyon is a 22-year-old rapper and producer who lives in East Harlem. Recently, he and his friends were going around and sharing who their closest friends were. Spencer’s answer? An 81-year-old woman who lives in Florida.
Alright, so maybe he was exaggerating a little bit. They’re not quite “best friends.” They are good friends, though, and talk nearly every day.
So how exactly did a 22-year-old in Harlem meet an 81-year-old in Florida? The Internet, of course.
Spencer first met Rosalind Guttman through “Words With Friends,” an app that lets you play Scrabble against others. Rosalind played the game to pass time in her retirement center. One day, they got randomly paired to play together. After their first game, they decided to keep playing each other.
After around a year, the two had played over 300 games together. They used the app’s chat function to talk about current events and their lives. One day, though, Spencer decided that his life had gotten too busy to keep playing the game.
Before he deleted the app, he messaged Rosalind to say goodbye and ask if she had any advice for him. Her advice? “Whatever you want out of life, just go grab it.”
Months later, he reinstalled the game and reconnected with Rosalind. They picked right back up where they left off.
When Spencer joked around with his friends that his best friend is an 81-year-old woman, the mother of one of his friends, Amy Butler, overheard. Amy is a pastor and wanted to share Spencer and Rosalind’s story, so she connected with Rosalind.
She decided to get the two to meet in person, so she and Spencer flew down to Florida to meet Rosalind in person for the first time. Amy shared, “It was more beautiful than I could have even imagined. There was no hint of awkwardness. It was like they were magnetically drawn to each other.”
While Rosalind hasn’t spoken publicly to anyone about the encounter, Amy shared an email from her to her congregation:
“Dearest Amy, I’m at a loss for words to describe today. Without question, it was one of the most memorable days of my life. I’m still basking in the glow of warmth and friendship. You and Spencer extended yourselves to me and embraced me in a most unbelievable fashion. My only words in this moment are a humongous thank you. I love you both to the moon and back.”
It’s incredible to see a story like this in the news these days when it seems like all we see is sadness. Share this story to help your friends get a little more faith in the world!
