When Lauren Flores-Walton was a newborn baby, her mother married Scott Dunster. While she was growing up, Lauren considered Scott her father and called him “dad.” Though Scott and Lauren’s mom eventually divorced, she continued to consider Scott her father.
Even though Lauren has always considered Scott her father, he has never been able to officially adopt her—even when he was married to her mother. When Lauren was young, her biological father still had parental rights.
Lauren is now 26-years-old. She works as a chef at Wooster Country Club in Massachusetts. She finally decided that she wanted Scott to be her official father.
Lauren took Scott and her grandfather to a NHL Bruins game at the Boston Garden. In the middle of the game, she left to pull out a sign. On the sign, she asked him to officially adopt her.
The sign said, “Hey Dad...26 years seems long enough don’t you think?! Want to adopt me?”
Before heading to the game, Lauren posted the sign to Instagram. She shared, “For those who don’t know, I have an insanely lucky story when it comes to my dad. My biological father isn’t important here, but this role in stepping down was the best thing he could have done for me. Then here comes Scott, who fell in love with my mother and a 3-month-old me.”
She goes on to share, “It may be just a piece of paper, but to us, I know it will mean more, and no matter the outcome he will always be my dad. So wish me luck when I show him this sign tonight.” Check out the video below.
Lauren has wanted to ask Scott to officially adopt her since she turned 18. She shared, “Scott has always been there, whether it’s buying me a video game or attending graduations and other celebrations...I would have asked him to adopt me sooner, but I’ve been busy with my career. Now that I’ve moved back to the Boston area to spend time with my family, it’s the right time.”
Lauren wanted to do something smaller to ask him to officially adopt her. She knew that he doesn’t like huge, showy things, so she decided to just hand him the sign.
Lauren shared, “He had a huge grin on his face and said, ‘I want to. I’ve always wanted to.’”
While the two still have tons of paperwork to get through, at least they will finally be family.
