Archie? Why Archie? Baby Sussex’ Unusual Name Explained: And It’s A Nod To Princess Diana

There HAD To be a Reason!

As oddsmakers were taking bets on just what Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan would name their new baby, all the traditional royal names such as ‘Arthur’ and ‘Elizabeth’ topped the list.

“The popular options at the time included Victoria and Elizabeth for a girl and Alfred and Edward for a boy. Many even speculated that the royal pair would honor Princess Diana by naming their child after her.”

Anyone who bet on those names did NOT come home a winner - as we all found out on Wednesday. But if you happened to guess that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would name their son ‘Archie Harrison,’ then perhaps you made a bundle.

Now that we’ve had a few hours to process the new prince's unusual moniker, the natural question becomes, ‘Why?’

The Royal Family never does anything on a whim, so it occurred to me that there had to be some significance to the name.

And there is! In fact, the meaning behind the boy’s name is very sweet, actually, and it even pays subtle tribute to the late Princess Diana, Harry’s mum.

Us magazine reports, “The name Archie has multiple meanings. In Scotland, it means ‘true and bold,’ while in Germany, it means ‘truly brave.’

Scotland, of course, is a member nation of the Commonwealth, and Prince Harry has German roots. Prince Philip’s family name was 'Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.' And before it was changed, Philip’s mother’s last name was actually ‘Battenberg,’ both decidedly German surnames. Awesome!

“The newborn’s middle name, Harrison, is of English descent and means ‘son of Harry.’

“The moniker is also a tribute to the 34-year-old duke’s late mother, Princess Diana, as one of her ancestors was Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, from Scotland.”

Now I love the name even MORE than I did when I first heard it. Knowing that little guy carries such a huge legacy on his shoulders demonstrates just how important members of the royal family are to the rest of the world.

And it’s so heartwarming that Harry paid loving tribute to his mother’s family in giving his first son the name ‘Archie.’

Whether the baby carries the more formal version of his name, ‘Archibald’ like his ancestor, or if he’s simply ‘Archie’ on the birth certificate, remains to be seen.

After all, his father’s real first name is ‘Henry’ which his parents shortened to ‘Harry’ right after birth.

Either way, we’re sure little Archie will make his mark on this world and forever have a place in the hearts of his loyal fans!

Welcome, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor! We're so glad you're here!!
