More sad news piled on top of the already tragic story of 39-year-old former WWE superstar Ashley Massaro. We now learn that she is believed to have taken her own life.
Ashley was reportedly found hanging by the neck on May 17th at her home in New York. At the time, no cause of death was announced, except that the death was considered "non-criminal."
“Ex-WWE superstar Ashley Massaro was found hanging in an apparent suicide, multiple sources connected with the situation tell TMZ Sports.
“The 39-year-old was found unconscious inside of her Suffolk County, NY home early Thursday morning -- and she was transported to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead."
Reports are emerging that her brain may her donated to Science, in the hopes of learning how head injuries can lead to mental illness and, often-times, suicide.
"Days after Ashley Massaro, a former WWE star and Survivor contestant, died suddenly at 39 in New York, her legal team alleges that she may have had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease that has been linked to head trauma.
"Massaro, who died in an apparent suicide, had long suffered from depression — and had alleged that injuries she sustained during her wrestling career exacerbated her condition."
Massaro was also engaged in a fierce legal battle against the WWE.
“Ashley Massaro had been part of a class action lawsuit against the #WWE where 60 wrestlers accused the wrestling juggernaut of failing to protect its employees from repeated head trauma & #concussions that eventually developed in long-term brain damage.”
People claims to have obtained an affidavit that Massaro filed in the case. “In the document, Massaro claimed that she had sustained multiple concussions during her 4-year stint with the WWE. She alleged that the WWE did not treat her injuries correctly.”
If that is the case, it makes the tragic situation even sadder.
Please pray for Ashley’s family, especially her daughter, as they work through this difficult time.
