Baby Girl Buried by California Mudslide Rescued with Minutes to Spare

January 11, 2018

After an unusually heavy rainfall in southern California, a mudslide left 17 people dead and eight people missing in the aftermath.

The number of deaths could easily be 18 if it had not been for a miraculous discovery by a local couple escaping the disaster.

Berkeley Johnson and his wife narrowly escaped the mudslide with their own lives. After boulders and mud rushed through their home late in the night, they crawled out of a window on their roof to escape.

Then they heard the faint sound of crying in the dark.

Johnson immediately rushed to look for the source of the crying, calling some firefighters over to help. After a moment of searching, they found it to be coming from a nearby pile of mud and debris.

“We dug down and found a little baby,” said an emotional Johnson. “We don’t know where it came from, but we got it out, got the mud out of its mouth.”

The baby was buried about four feet down and tangled up in roots. She was taken to a hospital right after her discovery.

“The girl is okay. It’s unbelievable,” he said. “There’s no way that we should have found that child, and probably 15 more minutes, it wouldn’t have been alive because it was cold and had been there for a while.”

The Johnson’s interview with local news is posted in the video below.

The current condition, age, and identity of the child are unclear at this time as well as whether or not she has been reunited with family members.

We will update this post if any new news on her condition is released.
