Ear piercing was a rite of passage for every baby and toddler it seems until recently when one mother posted a picture of her daughter’s alleged new piercing. One Facebook post has sparked such strong opinions on both sides of the issue with a mother’s parental rights being threatened.
Enedina Vance has her own views on body piercing so she decided to post a photo her baby girl with a cheek piercing on her Facebook page. Her post read, “So I got the baby girl’s dimple pierced!! It looks so cute, right?!! I just know she’s gonna love it!! She’ll thank me when she’s older lol If she decides she doesn’t like it, she can just take it out, no big deal [laughing emoji]”. Enedina knew people would voice their opinions, both good and bad, and that was her goal.
You might ask why would anyone seek negative attention. “The reaction that parents have when they see this beautiful perfect baby being…mutilated, that initial shock, that reaction of anger, I want them to hold on to that,” Enedina said in a CNN interview.
Enedina later posted a Facebook response stating the piercing is fake and was added via Photoshop. She is opposed to piercing, and circumcision, and wanted to expose the hypocrisy of society. She wrote, “Why so hypocritical? How is it so triggering, so enraging to see my baby with a pierced dimple, but actually knowing a baby is being strapped down & forcible having his most sensitive & innervative portion of his penis amputate, seems perfectly ok??”. So far, the post has been shared over 14,000 times and most major media outlets have covered her story. Whether you agree with Enedina’s tactics, one can acknowledge that she opened up the flow of communication and shed new light on the topic.
