On April 17, 2018, former first lady Barbara Bush as passed away according to the "Associated Press." She was 92 years old.
Sunday, April 15, the Bush family's spokesman, Jim McGrath, said that Mrs. Bush's health was declining significantly. With several trips to the hospital, she refused further treatment.
The 92-year-old was married to former President George H.W. Bush and decided to focus on comfort care until she passed away.
On April 15, McGrath said in a statement:
“Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care. It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others."
Mrs. Bush was born in New York on June 8, 1925. When she was just 16 years old, she met Mr. Bush when he was 17 years old. The couple met at a dance at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Even though Mr. Bush took off to serve his country in World War II as the U.S. Navy's youngest combat pilot, the pair wrote letters to each other faithfully.
After Mr. Bush brushed passed death when his plane was hit during a bombing run in the Pacific, he returned to his love and married her in January 1945.
Barbara Bush survived her husband George H.W. Bush, five children, fourteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Among her children was former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush and Mr. Bush have been married the longest among any presidential couple in American history.
