Boise, ID woman, Malinda Figueroa, gave birth to Christopher Ruben Figueroa on February 4th. Christopher was 23 weeks old and thus born a preemie. His mother? Fighting for her life just to give birth to baby Christopher.
Malinda had a stroke on January 24th that left her brain-dead and on life-support. Early on she was told that she should abort when she found out she was pregnant at age 38. She refused. Though she had many health problems, she wanted to make sure her baby was given life—she knew, however, the road wouldn’t be easy.
Malinda had a feeling from the beginning she wouldn’t live long. Early on she told the baby’s father, Chris Chavez, “You’re going to have to fight for our child.” And fight he did.
After frantically searching for a hospital that would take their case, they finally found a hospital that would admit them—Saint Alphonsus. Saint Alphonsus is a Catholic hospital committed to the ‘sanctity of human life.’
After thinking all hope was lost, Christopher was born at just 1 lb., 1 oz. He is currently stable and healthy for a preemie of his size. He will remain in the NICU until he is grown enough to be sent home with his father.
When Christopher was born, Malinda’s whole family was around. They all had great regard for Malinda and what she did for her baby.
“And Malinda is a superhero mom -- a mother who bravely sacrificed herself for her child -- who in death, incubated her son to life,” said Christopher’s grandfather.
I don’t think Malinda and Christopher were alone in their recovery. The prayers of the community were a big part of bringing this miracle into this world, despite the circumstances. Many people gathered outside the hospital to pray for them once they were admitted to the hospital.
Malinda's aunt, Julia Chavez-Reynoso, said in a report, “I don't know a lot of these people, but they all came together for little Christopher and my sister, and we are so thankful for that."
Unfortunately, Malinda passed away the following evening after the birth of Christopher. Her sacrifice for her baby will never be forgotten. She truly is the definition of a mother.
