Car Thief Never Expected to See This Surprise in the Backseat of Stolen Car

Early Tuesday morning, a suspect stole a car at a gas station in West Palm Beach, Florida. Once the thief drove off, he must have noticed something amiss in the backseat of the car.

Unbeknownst to him, he had stolen a car with an infant in the backseat of the car. He had assumed that since the vehicle was unattended, it was empty. But it wasn’t.

The thief then drove to the next gas station, knocked on the door of the station’s convenience store, and dropped the baby off inside.

“Take the baby! Take the baby!” the thief allegedly said. He then told the clerk to call the police before leaving.

Surveillance video shows a man in a white tank top and dark pants pulling up to the station in a dark colored car. He then takes the car seat with the baby in it out of the vehicle and runs up to the gas station door.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said that the suspect stole the vehicle at around 4 a.m. from a gas station near the Palm Beach International Airport.

The suspect then drove six miles to the next gas station and handed the baby over to the night worker preparing the store for the morning.

The 5-month-old baby was asleep the whole time and the store clerk called 911 right away. The police then notified the mother, who reunited with her child about a half hour later.

“It all happened so fast,” said Michelle Ashby, co-owner of the Sunoco gas station. “The suspect appeared to be scared and in a hurry when he knocked on the door.”

When the police first arrived, the baby awoke and began to cry. “It hurt my heart because being a mom of four, I knew he was hungry,” said Ashby. “When the mother arrived, she was just happy and relieved to have her baby.”

The car was later found abandoned and the suspect still remains at large as of this moment.

Many are calling into question the actions of the mother who left her baby unattended in the vehicle. Some claim that the thief was more concerned for the safety of the baby than the mother. We’re just happy everyone was unhurt in the whole incident.
