It was a heroic act that went terribly wrong.
Super Model Caroline Bittencourt lept into the ocean from her sailboat to rescue her two dogs from drowning when things took a sudden, tragic turn.
The Brazilian beauty ended up losing her own life after she got into trouble in the turbulent ocean water, and her husband’s attempts to rescue her failed.
The 37-year-old fashion icon was just out sailing with her husband and two canines when the unexpected happened. Her two beloved pups somehow fell out of the boat, which led to her dramatic action.
“According to Brazilian outlet Globo, the model jumped off a catamaran to attempt to rescue her dogs, who had fallen out of the boat.
"Bittencourt's father-in-law, Alfredo Sestini, told the outlet that the model's husband, Jorge Sestini, then jumped into the ocean to attempt to rescue her. He was rescued himself hours later."
Ms. Bittencourt’s agent, Andrea Boneti, released the following statement concerning the sad event.
"Jorge tried to save her. He saw Carol drowning and wasn't able to save her. It was a terrible moment for him,” she told the outlet.”
According to Globo (via translation), ‘She disappeared on Sunday afternoon [April 28] when she dropped off the boat where she was with her husband, Jorge Sestini - with whom he married in January of this year.
"He, who is in shock, was rescued by a sailor after about 5 hours in the sea in search of the wife.”
In addition to her husband, Caroline leaves a 17-year-old daughter, Isabelle.
Isabelle took to Instagram to thank the public for the outpouring of love, sympathy, and support in the wake of her mother’s tragic death.
“We are grateful for the support and affectionate messages we have received from Carol’s friends and fans," Bittencourt's daughter, Isabelle Bittencourt, shared on Instagram. "This energy drive fills our hearts with so much love."
Bittencourt’s modeling agency, OXYgen Models, issued the following statement about the tragedy:
"We are grateful for all the trust she has placed in us in these years of work and partnership, our condolences to the friends and family of the victim.”
The deceased worked primarily in Italy, modeling fashions by such luminaries as Valentino Garavani and Roberto Cavalli. “She also worked as a reporter for RedeTV! and RecordTV.”
Bittencourt’s demise comes just days after another Brazilian model died under unusual circumstances.
