Police were racing to Coldwater Golf Links at around 10:20 a.m. when they received an emergency call. Monday to investigate a possible missing person after her fellow teammates found her abandoned golf bag. Police found Barquin’s body in a nearby pond on the golf course. She had several stab wounds in her upper torso, neck, and head.
Police sent a tracking dog out with Barquin’s scent. The dog led them to the homeless encampment where Richard was found with several scratches on his face and he had a deep laceration on his left hand.
“What did he do to her?” an acquaintance at the camp asked Richards while police were searching the area.
Investigators said that Richards told an acquaintance that he had “an urge to rape and kill a woman” while the two were walking near the golf course. Officials said that he had been living in a homeless encampment near the golf course in Ames, which is about 30 miles north of Des Moines.
Ames Police Commander Geoff Huff said that homicides are rare in this city, and it’s "very troubling for something like this to happen in broad daylight."
Police found a bloody knife and clothes covered in blood that linked him to Richards. In June, Richards completed a prison sentence and has prior charges for harassment and burglary.
According to reports, Barquin was known as one of the most accomplished golfers and a very smart engineering student at Iowa State. This year, she had won the Big 12 championship and an amateur tournament in Europe. She also competed in the US Women’s Open Championship. Richards is currently in jail with a $5 million, cash-only bond. The investigation is still ongoing. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
