Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro has never been accused of being easy-going. In fact, his reputation for being hot-headed when dealing with conflict is world-renown. And his latest public appearance just further solidifies that impression in the minds of his fans.
The 75-year-old actor/producer is going through a very public divorce from third wife Grace Hightower. (Okay, he wasn’t technically married to Toukie Smith, but they maintained a decade-long relationship that produced twins sons) And if his behavior outside of the courthouse where De Niro spent the day in divorce proceedings is any indication, it just might make sense that all his relationships end in divorce.
Being twice-divorced myself, I don’t mean to cast aspersions on others of ’my kind’ who simply are not the marrying type. I'm just sayin' that, perhaps, someone like Robert De Niro who is in the public eye and makes his living off of the adulation and admiration of fans, might want to keep his tantrums a little more private!
Surprisingly enough, the incident in question was not targeted at his soon-to-be ex-spouse. Well, I guess, indirectly, it might be related, but let's just say Hightower was not in the visible vicinity when De Niro's rage erupted. We’ll leave it to a psychiatrist to examine the deeper implications. But, I digress. Let’s move on.
As De Niro exited the government building after what must have been a frustrating day, the ’Meet the Parents’ star had a meltdown when his driver was not out there waiting for him. He could be seen (and heard) talking on his cell phone, obviously berating the driver for not being where he wanted him to be.
“The ‘Goodfellas’ actor went nuts while frantically searching for his missing driver after spending the entire morning in court in his divorce case with estranged wife Grace Hightower.”
He could be heard losing it as he barked into his flip phone, “You’re not in front! You’re not where you dropped us off!”
Completely nonplussed by the crowd gathering around him, many snapping pics and filming video, De Niro continued his very loud harangue at the frazzled driver, who clearly was caught in traffic somewhere in the vicinity.
“On Worth Street! Then you’d see all the photographers here! You’re not where you dropped us off!”
Then, someone decided that something needed to be done to maintain any semblance of self-respect for the aging movie star. His lawyer gently approached De Niro and timidly suggested an out.
“Let’s go back in the building.”
De Niro wasn’t finished, though. He was on a roll and not even the astute advice from his highly-compensated attorney was enough to stop him in his tracks.
“This is ridiculous!” Ranted the irate celebrity, as he tried to move to the back of the courthouse. But the crowd was onto him now and continued to dog him for photos.
It was then that the actor resorted to hiding behind newspapers as he continued to wait and talk on his phone.
Social media users had a bit of fun at the award-winning star’s expense.
“Robert De Niro hid his face behind two newspapers after leaving divorce court because only a 75-year-old man would know where to find two newspapers.”
But, De Niro’s diehard fans are looking for the good in their hero, many finding a reason to admire the aging star.
“Robert De Niro using a black LG flip phone in 2019 is the most gangster thing he’s done since Goodfellas.“
The ‘Godfather II’ star and wife of 20 years Grace Hightower have been engaged in a contentious custody battle over the six-year-old daughter they share. The couple was also together for an additional ten years before their 1997 nuptials, making their time together a whopping three decades! De Niro and Hightower also have a 20-year-old son together, Elliott.
The couple was separated once before, two years after their wedding, but reconciled and managed to stay together until 2018 when De Niro filed for divorce.
