15-month-old Owen Montoya went into surgery last week in Arizona to put a cochlear implant in his left ear.
The special thing about the implants in Owen’s ears is that they can connect to phones and other devices using Bluetooth.
In the now viral video, Owen’s mom Janae, who is also a nurse, connected her phone to her son’s ears to play music for him to listen to.
“We were so excited to see him enjoying music this much,” she said. “It was the craziest moment ever.”
“When we found out Owen was deaf, it was hard for us because our family is very musical. I’ve always wanted him to experience it,” she went on.
“His grandparents used to sing, I used to sing, my brother went to a musical school, we’re all singers and very musical. It’s a huge part of everything we do.”
“I was a bit nervous when I turned the music on because lots of babies don’t react very well. I was expecting to have to turn it right off,” she added.
“But Owen is different; he marches to the beat of his own drum. Straight away he started dancing, bopping his head and rocking out.”
Janae was worried at first after Owen got scared by the beeping tests when the implants were first turned on. But as soon as the music started playing, his smile brought joy to the room.
Thanks to the Montoya’s Christian faith, the first song he listened to was a gospel song. Now, little Owen can’t stop listening to music.
“He’s been plugged in the last two days listening to different stuff and absolutely loving it,” said his mom. “He loves live music the most. I think he feels like he’s actually there.”

“This has opened so many doors to him,” his mother continued. “Owen is perfect the way he is, but the cochlear implant is a tool for him to build relationships and experience music.”
“It can be heartbreaking knowing something is closed off to your child, and now he has every opportunity in the world.”
