We couldn't think of a better way to kick off our "Inspiring Christians: Celeb Series" then with legendary actor, producer, and pastor, DeVon Franklin. You may or may not know DeVon by name, but you most certainly know his work. He was a studio executive in big hits like the latest “Karate Kid,” “Hancock,” and “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Needless to say, he’s worked on a lot of the films we know and love. But his true passion is talking about faith in his movies.
In 2014, DeVon began his own production company, Franklin Entertainment. Franklin Entertainment focuses on producing Christian content that can appeal to people with all sorts of backgrounds. Franklin Entertainment produced “Heaven Is For Real” and “Miracles From Heaven.” In his most recent animated film, “The Star,” he worked with big names like Kelly Clarkson, Patricia Heaton, Mariah Carey, and Oprah Winfrey to tell the story of Christmas. This time, though, from a different perspective—the animals.
DeVon recently wrote “The Hollywood Commandments: A Spiritual Guide to Secular Success.” In that, he shares his ten commandments for success in life. His commandments are spiritually based, but he also goes into detail on his own life and how he got to where he is now. This isn’t a book solely for Hollywood, though—instead, it’s a book for anyone who is trying to succeed in a secular world without losing their Christian faith.
We recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk with DeVon about how he navigates his Christian faith in Hollywood. In the interview, we asked about his #1 piece of advice for Christians—his answer is a great reminder for us all.
DeVon stated, “Jesus says that anyone who wants to follow Him must take up THEIR cross and follow Him every day. He didn’t say THE cross, He said take up THEIR cross.”
He adds, “I think for Christians the most important thing is to follow what God is telling you...sometimes God is gonna give us specific directions that’s gonna fly in the face of what the church may want us to do, what our family may want us to do, what our friends may want us to do.”
He went on to talk about the fact that God doesn’t always ask us to do things that will make sense. He shared, “God doesn’t submit what he wants us to do for committee vote. I have seen so many well-meaning Christians never walk out a fourth of their potential because they were afraid.”
DeVon talked about the importance of a support group, like the group of Christian celebrities he relies on, including his wife— actress Meagan Good. He also shared that it’s always more important to listen to God first. Never let your obedience to God come second to your obedience to your church, family, or friends.
He shared, “Put your obedience to God and what he calls you to do as number one. And I guarantee you, when you do that, when you follow Jesus wherever he leads, you will end up in the right place.”
DeVon had a lot of incredible things to say about faith in Hollywood. It’s clear that he has a passion for God, people, and producing incredible movies. Stay tuned for Part Two of our exclusive interview. We’ll discuss why he thinks it’s important to not pray about “everything.”
