Shots Fired: Former Oakland Football Player Brutally Murdered; Requesting Prayers

There has been some tragic news that has emerged from over the weekend. A former Oakland football player was killed during a shooting in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

On Saturday, September 1, a gunman shot two victims. One of the victims ended up dying from the gunshot wounds. The shooting happened on the 700 block of North Maney Avenue just after 11 p.m. When the Murfreesboro police arrived on the scene, they found two males injured with gunshot wounds

19-year-old former Oakland High School football player Michael Roper was killed that night, and a second football player, Jalen Locklayer, was injured and airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Locklayer's condition was not immediately known, but he is seeking treatment, according to "Daily News Journal."

Roper was administered CPR on the scene and was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford where he was pronounced dead.

"He loved and cared for everyone. He would do anything for you, and I'm really going to miss my son," Roper's mother, Michelle Roberts, said.

"I really hate for whoever is responsible for this - I really hate for them to not have known Michael because he would've been the friend that he may not have had."

Roper, who graduated in May 2017, signed to play football at Carson-Newman University, according to Oakland High School football coach Kevin Creasy. According to his family, Roper transferred to Tennessee State University last week.

The gunman is 18-year-old Izaiha Gleaves. He turned himself in and is looking at second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges.
