Sue Elcock, 68, went on a deep-sea fishing trip with her son, Simon, and made the catch of the year so far.
Elcock only went on the trip to keep her son company so she never expected to catch any fish, let alone catch an enormous monster-sized fish.
Elcock is from England and was visiting her son in Perth, Australia when they decided to go on a deep sea fishing excursion. On an early morning trip, she felt a tug on her line and knew she had hooked a “fair-sized fish.”
When she could finally see the fish for the first time near the surface of the water, she was shocked at the sheer size of it.
After 40 minutes of reeling in the fish, Elcock, her son, and his fishing buddies were finally able to haul the fish aboard. The fish measured 5 feet 4 inches long and weighed 130 pounds.
I just couldn’t believe the size of it when it reared its head out the water. It was the size of a sofa,” said Elcock.
“Simon is an experienced sea angler and I have been out with him before when I have been visiting,” she continued. “The biggest fish I’ve caught before was a snapper about a foot long and when this one took the bait on the bottom the tug on the line didn’t seem much.”
“Someone said you would need an awful lot of chips to go with a fish like that,” she said. “I’ve helped cut him up and get all that fish into the freezer. Simon and Michelle (his wife) will be enjoying fish barbecues for months when I’m long back in the UK.”
Her son Simon, an aluminum mine worker says he’s “thrilled” for his mother. “The photo of her holding the fish is one to treasure,” he said.
