High School Classes Resume Just Hours After Student Shoots Classmate To Death

On Monday, October 29, Matthews, North Carolina police officers rushed inside Butler High School after a student brought a gun to school and had shot and killed another classmate, according to "The Associated Press."

Officials say that the shooting occurred in the school's main hallway at around 7 a.m. all because one student was upset with the other. The school was put on lockdown.

The school's resource officer was nearby and was able to apprehend the shooter and take him into custody in a classroom until additional law enforcement arrived.

"We’re incredibly saddened that we had a loss of life on one of our campuses today. What makes it doubly difficult is that it was one of our students who was the shooter," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said.

"First of all, our hearts go out to the larger community and to all of the young people who witnessed this tragedy today," Wilcox said.

“We were able to get the victim out of the school, and he was transported by MEDIC to Carolinas Healthcare Uptown. And we can announce that he has succumbed to that wound. He has passed on,” Capt. Stason Tyrell, with the Matthews Police Department, said.

At about 9:30 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced that the school had lifted the lockdown and parents were allowed to pick up their children; however, the remaining students will resume with classes, the school district tweeted.
