A military plane carrying 257 people crashed Wednesday killing everyone on board. Just shortly after takeoff, the plane descended, plummeting to the ground.
The military plane crashed near a residential area in Algeria close to the Boufarik military airport where it originally took off from. Boufarik has a population of about 48,000 people and is about 18 miles southwest of Algiers.
According to reports, Algeria's defense ministry said that there were 247 passengers and 10 crew members on board the plane. Most of the victims were soldiers and their family members.
Farouk Achour, a civil protection agency spokesman, told the Associated Press that some of the victims had to be "extracted with deep burns caused by the fuselage catching fire."
The ministry also stated that the victims were placed in body bags and transported to the Algerian army's hospital in Ain Naadja to be identified.
With more than 300 emergency workers on the scene, it's still unclear as to what caused the crash.
The plane that crashed was a Soviet-designed Il-76 aircraft model. The aircraft has been around since the 1970s and it has had a good safety record overall. The plane is typically used for military transportation and commercial freight.
Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.
