Recently, a woman killed her two children and then killed herself after she found out her husband had died in a car accident.
The 34-year-old man, whom police are calling Mr. He, was presumed dead after his vehicle was found in a river; however, his body was never recovered.
After the investigation, authorities found out that the man had recently purchased an insurance plan worth one million yuan, which is about $145,000, according to "BBC."
He did not tell his wife about the insurance policy and had planned to use the money to pay off more than 100,000 yuan worth of loans. He also borrowed a vehicle to fake his death in a car crash on September 19.
Mr. He's wife wrote a suicide letter and posted it online. She grabbed her two children, jumped into a pond and drowned them. On October 11, the bodies of the 31-year-old wife, their 4-year-old son, and 3-year-old daughter were found in a pond near their home.
In the suicide letter, the wife stated that she was coming to "accompany him," and added that she had "only ever wanted our family of four to be together."
Mr. He turned himself into the police in Xinhua county in Hunan province on Friday, October 12. He was charged with insurance fraud and intentional damage to property.
According to "BBC," Mr. He had posted a video online of him crying and his confession. He said that he borrowed money to pay for treatment for his 3-year-old daughter who was suffering from epilepsy.
After his story and video went viral, it sparked thousands of conversations about financial struggles in the home and family medical issues.
