A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about the startling piece of evidence that just might exonerate Jessie Smollett in the case against him for filing a false police report in the alleged racist and homophobic attack on January 29th.
The ‘Empire’ actor claimed he was accosted by two MAGA-hat wearing white guys who called him names related to his being black and gay, poured bleach on him, and tied a noose around his neck.
As it turned out, the two white guys were two black acquaintances of Smollett who allegedly performed the ‘fake attack’ against Smollett in return for a $3500 payment.
The brothers were interviewed and, allegedly, flipped on Jessie, admitting to the conspiracy. That’s when Smollett was charged with 16 felonies for staging the phone hate crime.
Just then, the bombshell revelation became known and images of the actual check Smollett paid the brothers was for personal training, according to the memo written the bottom of the check. (Granted, anyone can write anything they want on the memo line, so to many, it wasn’t exonerating proof.)
Nevertheless, in the absence of any other revealing information about what went on during the March 26th emergency court hearing, we will have to assume that the check made a significant difference in how the case could proceed.
Smollett’s attorneys Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes released a statement, obtained by ABC 7 News.
“Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th.
"He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.
"Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong.
"It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.
"Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends and career.”
Reportedly, Smollet will do Community Service as the only consequence for his alleged part in the incident.
Twitter is exploding after the news came out:
“Jessie Smollett released and all charges dropped. This is sickening. Cook County is as crooked as Chicago’s mayor. Two tiered justice at work again!!
Some even say it is fair game after President Trump’s exoneration in the Mueller report;
“The hypocrisy of any Republican sayings this, LOL.”
“@CWBChicago nothing in Jessie Smollett having charges dropped?? Wtf is up with prosecutors? We’ve seen the video of his friends buying the rope and masks!!??? He needs to be charged!!!”
Obviously, this is a developing story. More later.
