On Tuesday, May 16, a 19-year-old former student walks into Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois, and open fires at the school resource officer during graduation practice.
At about 8 a.m. this morning, the school resource officer Mark Dallas confronted the gunman and returned fire, according to Sheriff John Simonton.
The sheriff also informed everyone that the gunman had shot several rounds before going down. The shooter sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the shoulder.
The shooting happened inside the high school's gym where all the seniors gathered for graduation practice, said City Administrator Danny Langloss. The seniors last day was Friday.
Langloss also said that the officer was not injured, nor was anyone else. Langloss's daughter was in the gym as she is a senior ready to graduate.
"We're lucky the officer was there. His brave actions saved a lot of lives," said Langloss.
The police believe the shooter acted alone and that there was no further investigation needed that would threaten the lives of the students or staff.
