Former first lady Laura Bush recently joined her daughter Jenna Bush Hager and Kathy Lee Gifford on the “Today” show. She left her husband, former president George W. Bush, behind in Texas for Valentine’s Day. While on the show, she shared a little bit about how their relationship began.
The day after the two first met, the went mini golfing on their first date. “We met the night before at a friend’s barbecue,” the former first lady shared. “The next day we went out to the Midland, Texas miniature golf course.”
Four months later, the two were married. According to the former first lady, it was “love at first sight.” Last year, the two celebrated their 40th anniversary together. Check out the full video here.
Though they have spent over four decades together, Laura decided to head to a different state to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year. She left her husband in Texas and went to visit her daughter, Jenna Bush Hager and her kids for the holiday.
Though she left him behind for her trip to visit the grandkids, she did leave one thing behind: a valentine. She shared, “It had owls on the front of it and it said ‘Owl always love you.’”
As cheesy as that is, apparently her husband isn’t much of a romantic at all. She hasn’t gotten a valentine to mark the day, but she and her daughter assured Kathy Lee Gifford that he would probably send flowers.
These two are such a classy first family! It’s great to see them staying strong, even after 40 years together.
