The Allegheny County medical examiner said in a statement that at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday the WWE champion was walking in Ross Township, Pennsylvania when he was struck by a pickup truck. Police told WPXI-TV that he was not in a crosswalk and that the driver of the truck remained on the scene.

Valiant was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital but the injuries he sustained were life-threatening. He died shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

In 1974, Valiant won the world tag team championships with James Fanning; they were known as The Valiant Brothers. He later partnered up with "Gentleman" Jerry Valiant to win it again in 1979.

Valiant managed Hulk Hogan in the 1980s, and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.
