A mother's love is one of the strongest forces in the world...and that goes for the animal world as well as the human world. When villagers spot a mother elephant digging frantically they know they need to find out what she is after.

According to eyewitnesses, the cow was walking past the open well with her baby when the little elephant tumbled in. Distraught at the loss of her child, the mother does the only thing she can think of, and that is to dig as quickly as she can in an effort to retrieve her little darling. As heroic as her actions are, they, unfortunately, are not helping.

Unbeknownst to the grieving mother elephant, every move she makes to free her child only causes more dirt and sand to fall into the hole. At this rate, the baby will be doomed to an agonizing death under the weight of the dirt coming down on it.

Concerned bystanders are determined to help, but how? A mother elephant who is trying to protect her child is a formidable adversary and if she thinks they are there to harm not help, she might charge at them out of fear. It's not an easy task at hand, but they are determined to not give up.

Then, one of them gets a brilliant idea. Spotting a nearby banana cart, the quick-thinking saviors dash off to get it. Wheeling the loaded cart close enough to catch the mother elephant's attention, they then move away to watch and see if it does the trick.

It does! The mother turns away from her task to take a much-needed nutrition break, and that's all the time the Good Samaritans need. While the mother's attention is briefly redirected, the bystanders rush over and successfully remove all the dirt the mother has inadvertently caused to fall into the hole.

With the unintentional obstacle removed from the calf's trap, the mother is able to pull her baby out with her trunk. The two happily walk away, the baby elephant hungrily helping himself to a long-awaited drink of milk.

I cannot imagine the sense of relief that must have washed over the traumatized mother when her babe finally emerged from the well. It's no different from how you or I would have felt if the trapped child was one of our own.

Never underestimate the strength of a mother's love and determination!
