Timothy Hill, 67, told traffic cameras that he thought they were number one, but not with the usual index finger.
Hill, who lives in England, has now been sentenced to eight months in prison for using an illegal laser jammer to avoid speeding tickets.
“If you want to attract our attention, repeatedly gesturing at police camera vans with your middle finger while you’re driving a distinctive car fitted with a laser jammer is an excellent way to do it,” said the head of traffic enforcement after the sentencing.
While conducting the investigation, authorities discovered Hill giving the middle finger to mobile traffic cameras on three separate occasions.
Hill denied the accusations at first but later confessed to throwing his jammer into a river in an attempt to avoid prosecution.
He pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice but was not charged with speeding since his jammer blocked police from determining how fast he was driving.
