63-year-old Constantin Reliu is definitely alive, but according to a recent court ruling, he is also very dead.
“I am officially dead, although I’m alive,” said Reliu to local media. “I have no income and because I am listed as dead, I can’t do anything.”
Reliu left his native country of Romania for Turkey in 1992 to start a new job. He last visited Romania in 1999 and apparently stopped contacting his family during this time, including his wife.
Reliu’s wife then filed for a death certificate after years of silence from her husband. According to the court, she had assumed he died in an earthquake and sought the death certificate to end the marriage and allow her to remarry.
On a recent trip back to Romania to renew his passport, Reliu was detained by immigration officers who informed him that he died back in 2003.
Reliu hopes to return to Turkey and get back to his small company there but he now faces the challenge of obtaining a new passport as a dead man.
According to a spokesperson from the court, Reliu was too late with filing an appeal against his death certificate and lost the case. The ruling is also final and cannot be appealed again meaning Reliu is stuck as a dead man walking.
What a predicament he is in! However, it is not like this could have been avoided if he had only stayed in contact with his family or filed his appeal on time.
