On Thursday Lamar Davenport was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the stabbing death of E’Dena Hines, the 33-year-old step-granddaughter of Hollywood superstar Morgan Freeman. “Hines, an actress with no blood relation to the star of ‘The Shawshank Redemption,’ was raised by Freeman’s second wife, Myrna Colley-Lee."

In a bizarre outburst during the emotional hearing, the mother of the killer lobbied accusations that the Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was the real cause of Hines’ death.

"The defendant’s family screamed that it was all the famed 'Shawshank Redemption' actor’s fault, alleging that he sexually abused the victim when she was younger.” In her frustration and despair, Davenport's mom hollered, “He’s innocent! It was an accident!”

Davenport was convicted of stabbing Hines, who was his girlfriend at the time, more than 25 times on August 16, 2015, He claimed to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he committed the horrendous crime.

According to court documents, “He was in the throes of a PCP-induced rage when he slaughtered Hines in full view of neighbors and pedestrians.”

During the trial, defense attorneys made several attempts to divert blame for the incident, saying that Davenport was not responsible due to his inebriated condition at the time of the murder. They also made the blockbuster claim that Freeman was engaged in an affair with Hines, who was the granddaughter of his second wife.

“The allegations of an affair between Freeman and his step-granddaughter E’Dena Hines were made by the defense during Davenport’s murder trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. Freeman has strongly denied the allegations.”

Rumors about her and the 80-year-old actor’s romantic involvement swirled for years, though both staunchly denied being in a sexual relationship.”

“The allegations of an affair between Freeman and his step-granddaughter E’Dena Hines were made by the defense during Davenport’s murder trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. Freeman has strongly denied the allegations.”

The New York Post reports that, before she was murdered, Hines “told her boyfriend-turned-killer that the actor had been secretly sleeping with her — confirming years-old claims about the illicit affair, according to defense lawyers.”

Which brings us to the logic behind the accusation that the death was Freeman’s fault:

“E’Dena Hines disclosed to Lamar Davenport and others that her grandfather engaged in a sexually inappropriate relationship with her,” Davenport’s lawyer, Beth Unger, claimed in court.

“His defense team didn’t go into further detail, but they provided testimony from a therapist who claimed that Davenport admitted to often arguing with Hines about infidelity — with each accusing the other of being unfaithful.

“Lamar admitted to me that they had a violent relationship,” said Dr. Jeremy Colley. “[Their] disagreements could be emotionally intense.”

In addition to the 20-year sentence, Davenport will be required to serve another five years under court-supervised after his release.
