Just one day before she was to turn 74, Israeli First Lady Nechama Rivlin died on Tuesday at the Belinson Hospital. Mrs. Rivlin, the wife of Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.
The world joins Israel in mourning the tremendous loss of their beloved First Lady. Mrs. Rivlin had been ill in recent years, fighting a pulmonary illness that culminated in a lung transplant less than three months ago.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed the country’s collective grief, as well as his own personal sense of loss in one of the first messages of condolence after her death.
"Together with all citizens of Israel, my wife Sara and I express deep sorrow over the passing of Nechama Rivlin, the wife of President Reuven Rivlin.
"We all prayed for her recovery during the recent period in which she fought for her life heroically and with strength of spirit. We send our deepest heartfelt condolences to the President and all members of his family. May her memory be blessed."
Mrs. Rivlin forever won the hearts of the American people during the couple’s visit to the United States in 2017.
“One of her most memorable moments when was during President Trump's visit to Israel in May 2017, when U.S. First Lady Melania Trump walked hand-in-hand with Rivlin, assisting her as they walked into the residence."
President Rivlin's family issued a statement Tuesday morning expressing their gratitude to "the staff of the Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva for their devoted, sensitive and professional treatment during the past few months, night and day, with open hearts and shining faces."
"The flags at Beit HaNasi have been lowered to half-mast in honor of Nechama Rivlin ז"ל, Israel's First Lady, who passed away earlier today."
