Recently in Italy, families heard shouting and crying coming out of a block of apartments. They called the police to come and resolve whatever was happening. When officers responded, though, they found a situation very different than what they expected.
When four officers arrived at the scene of the yelling and crying, they found an 84-year-old woman, Jole, and her 94-year-old husband, Michele. There was no break-in attempt, nor were there any major disturbances.
Apparently, Jole and Michele had been watching television. Jole was so overwhelmed with the sadness in the news that she began to loudly cry. The couple hadn’t seen any other people recently, so their loneliness added to the sadness they felt from watching the news.
Jole and Michele have been married for 70 years. They shared with the officers that they hadn’t been visited by anyone is quite some time.
The officers noticed that it didn’t seem like they had eaten well recently. On the table, there were some old grapes and no evidence of meals being cooked or eaten. The police called an ambulance to come to check on the couple, but while they waited, they decided to help them prepare a meal.
One officer cooked Jole and Michele spaghetti with butter and parmesan cheese. The other three officers sat down to talk to the couple to help them feel less lonely.
The officer thought that they would have to resolve a crime, but instead they ended up keeping a lonely couple company for an evening. The officers were able to do exactly what was needed to help the couple feel better.
Always remember that there are probably lonely people in your community. Whether they stay home all day, live in a nursing home, or just need someone to talk to—all they need is someone to reach out. You might make a huge impact on someone’s life.
