Animal activists are outraged after a video shows a zoo visitor throwing a lit cigarette into an orangutan enclosure. What is even more shocking is what happened next.
An orangutan inside the enclosure, a 22-year-old ape named Odon, picked up the smoldering cigarette and began to smoke it himself.
Watch it all unfold in the video below.
While the onlookers laughed at the sight, animal activists are not amused. They are condemning the zoo’s lack of supervision and discouragement of such activity around their animals.
This all took place at the Bandung Zoo in Indonesia. This also isn’t the first time this zoo has been targeted by animal rights activists.
Last year, the zoo was accused of starving its bears after footage of the emaciated animals begging for food surfaced online and went viral.
Activists claim that Indonesia needs to raise the animal welfare standards it has for its zoos as many animals are poorly treated. More than 1 million people have signed a petition on Change.org calling for the Bandung Zoo to be shut down.
The zoo has responded saying it regrets the incident and showed a sign that warns visitors to not give food or cigarettes to the animals.
Another Indonesian zoo orangutan named Tori is famous for having a decade-long smoking habit after picking up dropped butts left by visitors. Orangutans are a critically endangered species.
