Everyone is familiar with the story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” but for one Mississippi boy, the threat of Christmas being stolen was just too real to be taken lightly.
TyLon Pittman, a five-year-old from Byram, Mississippi, was concerned about the possibility of missing out on Christmas after watching the Grinch on TV. That’s when he called 911 to report the theft of Christmas to the police.
Grinch fan and Byram Police officer, Lauren Develle, visited TyLon to let him know that they won’t let the Grinch steal Christmas this year. But Byram Police weren’t done saving TyLon’s Christmas.
Later in the week, Develle and honorary junior officer, TyLon, took matters into their own hands and arrested the Grinch himself to ensure that he wouldn’t steal anyone’s Christmas this year.
The Grinch, still wearing his Santa outfit, was lead into his holding cell at the police department by both Develle and TyLon. “You have saved Christmas for the people of Byram,” said the Grinch to TyLon. “Your bravery is unmatched. You have saved the day.”
“Why are you stealing Christmas?” TyLon asked. The Grinch thought for a moment but then answered with a shrug.
TyLon wants to be a policeman when he grows up, so his first “arrest” was especially meaningful. “For them to go this far and have this happen, when he wants to be a police officer, it means a lot,” said his mother, TeDera Graves. “It just shows that there are some really good people out there.”
“When you turn 21, come back and I’m going to give you a job application, OK?” Byram Police Chief Luke Thompson told TyLon.
“Let’s have a little joy this year,” Thompson continued. “And this has certainly brought a lot of people joy.”
