On Monday, September 17, a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department deputy was shot and killed. Deputy Mark Stasyuk was 27 years old and had been with the department for four and a half years, Sheriff Scott Jones said according to reports.
At approximately 1:44 p.m., Stasyuk and 28-year-old Deputy Julie Robertson were responding to an emergency call from employees at the Pep Boys auto shop near Folsom Boulevard and McGregor Drive. When the deputies arrived on the scene, the suspect started firing. The incident took place in two locations; beginning at Pep Boys and then spilling over to a nearby parking lot.
Deputy Stasyuk, who got married six months ago, was shot and killed and Deputy Robertson was shot in the arm but is expected to recover from her injuries. A bystander was also hit during the gunfight and another citizen was injured but they were not shot. At this time, their conditions are not immediately known.
The suspect was shot and injured but is expected to recover from his injuries. He was taken into custody.
