Safety Alert: Don’t Fall Prey to This Easy-to-Prevent Theft

December 19, 2017

The holidays are an open season for crime. Theft and property crimes increase significantly between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Because of this, it’s important to do everything you can to prevent crime impacting you.

When you go to the grocery store, you probably set your purse in your cart. There’s no shame in that—those things get heavy after a little bit. And when you’re already battling your cart, there’s no point dealing with that extra weight on your shoulder.

However, this common practice might put you at a greater risk of being stolen from. When you’re not carrying your purse, you can’t keep track of it as easily. If you step away from your cart for a moment, someone could easily come by and steal it.

A police department in New Hampshire recently released a warning. They advise people to secure their bags to their cart while shopping. This will keep thieves from being able to steal your bag in a moment.

According to the Facebook post, “When using a shopping cart as you browse through the store, keep your purse zipped or closed and secure it to the cart by clipping the child safety belt through the strap. This will help in preventing someone from taking advantage of your distraction and running off with the purse.”

Instead of being able to walk by and take your bag, they would have to stop to undo hooks or buckles. Your purse is much safer this way because thieves are unlikely to take the time to unsecure your bag.

If the cart you are using doesn’t have a child safety belt, you can keep a cheap carabiner in your purse. When you need to, you can use that carabiner to secure your bag to the cart.

While this is a great tip to help keep your items safe, there are other ways to stay secure this season. Check out a few tips below:
Stay alert
Park in well-lit areas
Never unlock your car until you are next to it
Hide shopping bags in your trunk
Shop with friends and family members

Stay safe this holiday season! Hopefully, this tip will help you keep your items safe.
