A tennis star's ex-husband has killed their son and daughter in their sleep, according to police. At this time, we are asking our readers to keep the family in their prayers as they go through this tragic time.
Just after 10:30 p.m. on Friday, September 21, Boone County, Indiana police arrived at a horrific scene when they discovered the bodies of 50-year-old Michael Hunn, and his two children, 13-year-old Shelby, and 15-year-old Harrison. The children were found inside Hunn's rural house about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
The children's mother is Stephanie Reece was a former pro tennis player who was a five-time All-American at Indiana University, and in 1996 she ranked 79th in the world in doubles, according to the New York Post.
Zionsville school officials notified Reece at about 9:30 a.m. when both her children didn't show up at school. She texted both her children, but neither one of them responded. When no one answered the door at Hunn's house, Reece called the authorities.
When police arrived at the scene, they forced themselves into the home and discovered both teens dead in their beds and their father was found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
“I’ll never be able to explain why it happens. It’s a tragic event, we see it all too often, and we just don’t have the answers sometimes for why these things occur,” Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielson said.
“This is a community that’s come together in the past, it’s going to come together in this particular event as well, and we’re gonna try to get through it," Nielsen continued.
A friend described Shelby as "always such a sweet girl," one who was "so funny and crazy and everybody loved her," according to reports.
The same student described Harrison as "a really great kid."
“He was there for everybody tried to make people laugh they were having a bad day,” the kid added.
Another student said: “Harrison was definitely one of the nicest kids you would ever meet.”
Reece competed at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, French Open, and the Australian Open before she took another job at East Hampton Indoor Tennis Club on Long Island in 2000.
Hunn worked as a general manager at Midwest Studios, which is a company that develops interactive exhibits, media, and video. Reece and Hunn had been married for 17 years before divorcing in late 2017. The two shared custody of their teenaged children, and the kids would stay at their dad's place during regularly scheduled visits.
Despite the split, Reece said that she and her ex-husband had a good relationship and that she's utter shock. "She did not see this happening at all," Nielson said.
According to the New York Post, Reece was concerned about Hunn's behavior with their children, however. She requested that his time with the children be reduced and that his blood alcohol level should be monitored. The children told their grandmother that their father was not taking care of them and he was not driving them to events because of his "heavy drinking."
Five months later, Hunn agreed to use a breathalyzer and send the results to the distraught mother for 120 days. Also, he agreed to pay weekly child support, according to a mediation agreement.
On August 7, however, Reece filed another petition to hold Hunn in contempt for failure to pay the agreed child support. The hearing was scheduled for next week.
There are no further details available at this time. Please keep Reece and the entire family in your thoughts and prayers.
