Late Tuesday morning, an 11-month-old baby was reportedly kidnapped. The baby was left unattended inside a running car when the mother went inside a building to pick up her other child.
The event took place at about 10:15 a.m. when police responded to a carjacking report on 18400 block of Gault Street in Los Angeles.
The LAPD said that the mother went to pick up her other child at a caregiver's house. When the mother went upstairs, she left her 11-month-old boy, Leo, unattended in the running car.
When the mother came back outside, she witnessed an unknown female hoping inside the car and driving off with her baby inside, according to LAPD Capt. Billy Brockway.
Police issued advisories across the city and countywide for a kidnapped child. The vehicle was described as a white Infiniti G20 sedan. Airships were also deployed.
Two hours later and with the public's help, Leo was found inside the abandoned vehicle. Police say that the boy was left alone for quite awhile.
“While we were doing the investigation, a citizen reported the vehicle was left with the child in the car, allegedly for a couple hours," said LAPD Lt. Manny Martinez.
Officials said that a plumbing crew found the car and noticed a baby left alone inside. The location was near 15000 block of Enadia Way.
Leo was taken to the hospital and examined by doctors. Police say that he should be fine. He has now been reunited with his mother.
The suspect had already left the scene before the police arrived but she is described as a Hispanic female named Maria Elizabeth De La Torre and has been seen around the neighborhood before.
She will likely face kidnapping and grand theft auto charges. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the police.
