One athlete competing in a marathon race in Ohio was nearing the finish line when things took a tragic turn.
22-year-old Taylor Ceepo was less than one mile from completing the grueling race when, for some unknown reason, she collapsed. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Ceepo was not the only participant falling ill at the race. She was, however, the only fatality.
“University Hospitals healthcare providers treated about 60-70 people at the marathon,” according to University Hospitals spokesman George Stamatis.
The Cleveland Marathon, held on May 19th, was attended by 15,000 runners. The temperatures that day were in the 80s, considered on the warmer side for this time of year.
No cause of death was immediately available, and an investigation into it will be conducted.
Organizers of the annual event made a statement concerning Taylor’s death.
“We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the young woman who collapsed during the race this morning. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to her family and friends at this time.”
"It is with great sadness that our Walsh family has lost one of our own, Taylor Ceepo, too soon.
"To all of our Cavaliers out there...please pray for Taylor, her family, Women's Soccer teammates and coaches during this difficult time."
“Ceepo, from Medina, had just graduated from Walsh University a few weeks ago. Prior to that, she attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron.”
"On behalf of the STVM community, we extend our deepest condolences to the parents, family and friends of Taylor Ceepo VM15. Mass at STVM on Monday at 7:15 am."
"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20
"Ceepo was running the 42nd Annual Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon Sunday morning, which is 13.1 miles. She was less than a mile from the finish line when she collapsed.
"She was rushed to University Hospitals when she passed away. She was surrounded by her mother, boyfriend, and friends."
