President Trump took to the airwaves early this afternoon to announce that he and Congressional leaders have agreed to a deal that includes reopening the government and, maybe even more important, to authorize back-pay to government workers who’ve been without paychecks for over a month.
“I am very proud to announce we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government,” he said to applause from gathered Cabinet members.”
The shutdown, which has gone on for 36 days has been the longest in the nation’s history. Today’s announcement, however, is not the end-all and be-all. It is a temporary measure to get workers paid and to give lawmakers the opportunity to make one more attempt at resolving the intractable border wall issue. Both President Trump and Democrat leadership have seemed unmovable on their positions.
The President refused to sign any deal without the $5.7 billion he insists upon to build a wall on the Mexico/U.S. border. Democrats refuse to even consider funding the wall, saying it is ‘immoral’ and ‘ineffective.’ Thus the shutdown.
But before Democrats start celebrating, they really ought to take a good hard look at what the next move will be if they continue to stonewall the building of the wall.
Just this Thursday, Mr. Trump vowed to never cave on the border wall.
“Nancy just said she “just doesn’t understand why?” Very simply, without a Wall it all doesn’t work. Our Country has a chance to greatly reduce Crime, Human Trafficking, Gangs and Drugs. Should have been done for decades. We will not Cave!”
So that can mean only one thing: the Emergency Order is coming!
Some astute journalists read between the lines of the President’s speech, and see the writing on the wall:
“lawmakers would have three weeks to reach an agreement that addresses President Trump's border wall funding request. If they don't reach a deal, President Trump is expected to say he'll invoke a national emergency.”
In fact, Mr. Trump confirmed that speculation, with no attempt to hide the fact that there WILL be a border wall - with or without congressional approval.
"If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shutdown on Feb 15th (again), or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the constitution of the United States to address this emergency. We will have great security" - @realdonaldtrump 1/25/09
For those who think the President has “caved” they seriously need to think again. Do you really think Mr. Trump is giving in on the border security issue? STAY TUNED!
