Near the end of every year, companies release the color of the year for the coming year. The color of the year does depend on what you pay attention to. Fashion websites choose one, art websites choose another, but the “Color of the Year” that gets the most press is Pantone.
Pantone is an American-based company that focuses on standardizing color. They are most famous for their Color Matching System. It attempts to standardize colors, regardless of manufacturer or location.
According to Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of Pantone Color Institute, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design. It’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
Recently, Pantone released their “Color of the Year” for 2018: Ultra Violet.
According to their release, Ultra Violet is “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade...Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”
They go on to explain that “Ultra Violet” hints toward the mysteries of the stars and what lies ahead. “The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”
They mention the musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, who each used Ultra Violet as a way to express individuality. They state, “Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”
Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017 was “Greenery.” They claimed that Greenery is a symbol of new beginnings. It brings forward new life and unity.
Moving from 2017’s new beginning of Greenery to 2018’s future-looking Ultra Violet, Pantone is tracking many trends in society. People are beginning to lean on development and looking toward the future. It encourages people to find their creative outlets.
While I wouldn’t necessarily wear the color of the year, it’s a great move toward looking to the future and finding passions. What do you think of the latest Pantone color?
