In an Emergency, This Iphone Feature Could Save Your Life

February 05, 2018

Emergency situations can be terrifying. Whether it’s a medical emergency, or you hear someone breaking into your house, it’s important to contact Emergency Services as quickly as possible.

Luckily, many cell phone companies are making it easier to contact emergency services quickly and easily. In the latest iOS11 update for iPhones, there is a feature that makes this easier than before—but only if you know about it.

This feature is called the “Emergency SOS.” It helps you easily contact emergency services when you need to.

For iPhones 7 and previous models that have been updated to iOS11, rapidly press the power button five times. An “Emergency SOS” slider will appear on your screen. Drag this slider across to call emergency services.

For iPhone 8 models and iPhone X models, press and hold the power button and the volume button at the same time. Continue to hold them down until the “Emergency SOS” slider appears. You can release the buttons and drag the slider to call emergency services.

If you don’t release the buttons and continue to hold them, a countdown and alarm will sound. When the countdown reaches zero, it will automatically call emergency services. The setting for the countdown alarm can be changed in settings (Settings -> Emergency SOS -> Countdown Sound).

For all phone models, once you have ended the call with emergency services, a text will be sent to all of your emergency contacts alerting them to your current location, unless you change this setting. Your contacts will get updates on your location for the next 24 hours—or until you stop sharing the updates.

You can add emergency contacts in the “Health” app on your phone. This also allows you to add any health conditions that might be important in an emergency.

This feature is an easy way to keep yourself safe in emergency situations—but it will only work if you know how to use it. Share this article with your friends and family to ensure that they know about this feature—and be sure to update your iPhone to iOS11 if you haven’t already.
