This Year’s Flu Is Extremely Dangerous—Find out How to Protect Yourself

January 12, 2018

According to the Center for Disease Control, this year’s influenza is particularly bad. Typically, the flu begins around October and hits its peak between December and February. This year, the flu season started early.

Half of all states reported early flu cases in the 2017-2018 season. As of the end of 2017, many states already have had high activity levels of influenza—and it has only increased since then.

Many emergency rooms in states with severe activity level have been overwhelmed by people needing to be treated for flu-like symptoms. At this point, there are no nation-wide numbers, but California alone has reported that the flu has contributed to the deaths of 27 people under the age of 65 already.

Although this flu virus is especially vicious and contagious, there are some ways that you can protect yourself and your family. Check out this list of some of the best ways to stay protected.

1. Get vaccinated

According to the CDC, the best way to stay protected from the flu is by getting vaccinated. This year, researchers have shared that the vaccine is not as effective as other years, but according to the CDC, it is still helpful in prevention and limiting the spread of the flu.

2. Avoid close contact

If you are sick or experiencing any symptoms, avoid going out as much as possible. If you have friends or family members who have symptoms, be sure to keep your distance to protect yourself.

3. Stay at home

If at all possible, stay at home if you experience flu-like symptoms. Because this year’s flu is especially contagious, it’s important to avoid others while sick.

4. Wash your hands

As with all viruses, it’s crucial to regularly wash your hands. You should also avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to prevent the virus from getting into your system.

Good luck trying to stay safe this year. Kids, elderly people, pregnant women, and sick people should be especially careful, so make sure to share these tips with anyone near you.
