"Don't ever sell drugs to policemen, they don't like it, they tend to tell judges, people come get you, and then you eat very bad food for a long time," Tim Allen said in an ABC interview.
Allen has never claimed to be the perfect Christian, and likely never will. His past has taken him on a doozy of a rollercoaster.
When Allen was 11 years old, his dad was hit by a drunk driver and died. It was then when Allen began to question God. Allen even thought that maybe he should have prayed harder or should have been with his dad in order to prevent his death.
“I knew my father was dead, but I was never satisfied with why he was dead. I wanted answers that minute from God. ‘Do you think this is funny? Do you think this is necessary?’ And I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with my creator ever since.” Allen said in a 2012 interview.
As the years went on, Allen began to find comfort in drugs and alcohol. On October 2, 1978, Allen was arrested and charged with possession of over 650 grams of cocaine. He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, and after two years in federal prison, he was released.
Thankfully, once Allen was released, he turned to comedy and began stand-up as a career. He believes his sense of humor saved his life; it was his "ally."
Ironically, one day he received a phone call from his parole officer and then the next day he received a call from Disney. His career in entertainment began to take off. He stared in "Home Improvement," the Disney movies "The Santa Clause" trilogy, "Toy Story," and "Wild Hogs," among many other big hits.
“For years, I just did not like this idea of God, church,” he said when he was still struggling with his father's death. “(I was) still a churchgoer, but constantly a cynic.”
“Whoever built me, this is too much, too weird that it happened by accident,” Allen, who calls God "The Builder," said. “It didn’t happen by accident.”
“I always do ask The Builder, what did you want me to do?” Allen said. “And I do ask it. But you got to be prepared for the answer.”
