Sad news crossed the newsroom this morning. Fans of "The Overtones" have a hard pill to swallow after learning that one of the singers has passed away.
Timothy "Timmy" Matley was only 36 years old when he passed away on April 11, according to the “Independent.” He had been battling skin cancer since 2016 when he was diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma. He passed away in the U.K.
Matley was born on February 16, 1982, and was a singer from Cork, Ireland. At age 14 years old, he was interested in performing arts. Two years later, he traveled to London to audition for a performing arts school. In his twenties, Matly audition for "The X Factor."
In 2010, Matly joined the vocal harmony group "The Overtones," which was originally called "DYCE and Lexi Joe," as the lead singer. The band had four top 10 albums in the U.K.
The circumstances surrounding his tragic death has not been confirmed. However, his fellow bandmates wrote on Twitter paying tribute to their brave friend.
"It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that our dear friend and brother Timmy has passed away. We know this news will be as heartbreaking for you all as it is for us. We appreciate your love and support at this difficult time."
Matley planned to go skydiving on May 3 to raise funds for "The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity" which is the hospital where he received treatment. He has raised over $7,000 so far.
