With great size comes great security! Large dog breeds offer so much joy to their family. Even though they take up quite a bit of space on the couch and eat way too much, they are family and we love them!

10. Dogue De Bordeaux (“French Mastiff”)

This 150-pound breed is one of the oldest breeds in Europe. Its most distinctive feature is its large head—one of the biggest of all dog breeds. This dog became popular when the famous 1989 film “Turner and Hooch” came out.

9. Anatolian Shepherd

This dog is very instinctive and protective of its family. This breed can weigh up to 144 pounds and is mainly used to protect their family and livestock. This dog is believed to be originated thousands of years ago from a small region in Turkey.

8. Leonberger

This dog is a mixed between three large dogs: The Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard, and the Newfoundland. This dog weighs up to 170 pounds and is very loyal to its family. They were derived from a city in Germany and was bred as a “symbolic dog” that would mimic a lion.

7. Newfoundland

This dog isn’t necessarily the heaviest or tallest of dogs, but some have grown to 6-7 feet tall when they stand on their hind legs. These dogs can weigh as much as 200 pounds but the average is 100-150 pounds.

This dog can weigh between 110-200 pounds and is known as a “Legendary Hero”, rescuing skiers who are lost or stuck on a mountain. This breed also received a spotlight on them in the 1990s when the famous movies, "Beethoven", was released.

This dog is known for its very strong bones and muscular built. This dog weighs between 100-130 pounds and has a fur coat to manage high altitudes. This dog is also known to rescue skiers lost or stuck on mountains.

4. Great Dane

This breed is known for being one of the tallest breeds. They weigh between 100-200 pounds and have been around for more than 400 years. This breed was bred by Germans to protect their country estates and hunt wild boar.

3. Irish Wolfhound

This breed is also one of the tallest breeds out there. This dog usually weighs between 105-125 pounds. The military used to use these dogs to drag men off horses and chariots during war. Today, they are companion dogs who compete in tracking and luring courses.

2. Neapolitan Mastiff

This breed is known to protect their family and their property. They typically weigh between 110-130 pounds. This breed was developed in Southern Italy.

1. English Mastiff

This breed is considered to be the largest dog in the world as far as mass goes. They can weigh up to 220 pounds. The world record for the largest dog was an English Mastiff. His name was Zorba and weighed 343 pounds.
